A meditation for December 12

Holy One,

We give thanks for the manifestation of Mary, in Old Mexico, as the Lady of Guadalupe.

To a people who had been occupied, enslaved, and treated as "other" because of the color of their skin and the features of their faces, you gave an image of hope:  the Virgin, india like them, brown-skinned, and perpetually pregnant with Jesus. You gave words of love in their own language: Am I not here, I who am your mother?

May we, like the beautiful Lady, ever be pregnant with Christ: ever ready to bring forth your holy compassion to our world. And may those of us who are privileged never forget that the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to the poor, as one of the poor. May we never forget, in the midst of injustice, whose side you take.

Amen.
